photographie-irie > 'Oops, I did it again', Chatuchak Market, Bangkok, Thailand

Britney's double again. Market-goers are just visitors and locals like you and me and him, shopping for daily needs and a maybe few more extraordinary items you can't find elsewhere. Food, clothing, appliances, jewelry, furniture, herbs, massages, pets, plants, baby shark heads, nose ring to ear chains, penile carvings....all ripe for serious bargaining.
photographie-irie > Sunset in the Similans, Thailand

Just off of the western coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea, this marine national park offers world class diving and snorkeling that makes many top 10 lists. Multi-day trips boating out of Phuket or Khao Lak take you among the various islands to see the underwater creatures you always wanted to see. Camping is also available on a few islands, with cabins on one for those not wanting to sleep on a boat, or preferring a less organized visit. Provision well and prepare to be pretty laid back once you're there.

Just south of Khao Lak lies Posieden Bungalows, with multi-day live aboard snorkel adventures to the Similan Islands. A much more relaxed place than Phuket to the south or even Khao Lak. The upscale Khao Lak rebuilt in the Tsunami's wake is much more developed than the old town. Poseiden's snorkeling/free diving trips are more relaxed than their scuba counterparts out of Phuket or the speed boats from Khao Lak, as are their bungalows. Nice for snorkeling is that one Similan Island is off limits for scuba. Nothing against scuba, but when dive spots hit top 10 lists, the exponential growth really cranks up the noise and activity level. Places to swim get rationed, and overnight stays in nice coves take on trailer park character with generator noise overwhelming wind and surf. That being said, the Similans are still most excellent fun with the fantastic fish and good coral that make it popular.
photographie-irie > Chill in Khao Sok (sounds redundant), Khao Sok, Thailand

A great respite and contrast from the more popular beach scene along the coasts. Many visitors to southern Thailand miss out on this oasis since they never leave that island scene. In the midst of karst mountain terrain between the coasts, this national park contains tropical rainforest older than the Amazon, a huge karst strewn reservoir where you can stay in floating huts, with howling gibbons, barking deer, and a huge assortment of other wildlife. Away from the reservoir lies this little village on a beautiful river where mellow is cultivated.

Really getting away, this was a Thailand highlight. Take a longtail from the dam past beautiful karst scenery to these floating bungalows in the middle of the animal rich jungle lake. Do a sunset and sunrise kayak into the howling gibbon tree circus. Very very basic bamboo huts are perfect for the stunning setting. Good place to write a book. Or extended kayak trip. You can arrange pricier tours from Khao Sok, or head for the dam and negotiate on your own with a longtail captain.

South of Khao Sok on a motorbike cruise, mostly wild land even outside the park with only an occasional home or small cluster. To the left is the Gulf of Thailand and Ko Pha Ngan with it's "any stage of the moon is an excuse to party" parties. To the right is the upper reaches of Andaman Sea islands and beaches stretching down beyond Phuket to Malaysia.
photographie-irie > Troop of Macaques, Khao Sok, Thailand

A troop of Long-Tailed Macaques make their home at a Buddhist shrine near Khao Sok. This basket is just one of any multitude of objects these funny monkeys make into communal toys. They seem easy followers of Buddhist faith, comfortably claiming the temples as their home. The interplay between colorful saffron robed monks and wild monkeys was an interesting counterpoint to the otherwise subdued nature of the temples.
photographie-irie > Ao Nang Sunset, Thailand

After escaping the fantastically beautiful but resultingly popular and increasingly developed Railay Beach area, this quiet sunset seemed a peaceful retreat. Until a friend who'd kayaked with me to some much too distant offshore islands unfortunately found no motorcycle key in his pocket upon return, a few hours ride from our rooms. In spite of an immediate bummer, a few beers, traveling locksmith, and a couple dollars solved the issue within an hour. These longtails like the one being being anchored shuttle visitors from Ao Nang to Railay Beach and surrounding areas.
photographie-irie > Baby Elephant at Hat Klong Muang Beach, Thailand

Another escape from the upscaling crowds of Ao Nang and Railay Beach, this quieter if less dramatic beach had the added fun of playing with and bathing this young elephant. After some beach time stretching his legs and fondling the tourists, it was time for a swim in the calm waters with this gentle mini-giant. Not a tourist attraction or fee based event, rather just the daily bath a mahout couple provides their charge, and that's hard to resist joining in.
